Double Scoop of Success

Gelatissimo’s expansion brings jobs, flavors, and inspiration to Irvine.

After years on Wall Street, Sarah Maninang and her husband, Rey, decided to leave behind the corporate world and pursue their dream of owning a small business. Already proud owners of a Gelatissimo franchise on Balboa Island in Newport Beach, the couple recently expanded to open a second location in Irvine. “We felt like it was the best choice we ever made!” Sarah shared. “We’re proud of how quickly we built the stores and are ready to serve our customers.”

With Gelatissimo, each franchise is independently owned and operated — and Sarah has proven that passion and preparation are key to creating a thriving business. Located at University Center in Irvine, their newest shop serves up artisanal gelato made fresh daily.

Planning, Pivoting, and Investing

Opening a second location came with its share of challenges. At first, Sarah and Rey were interested in securing debt capital to fund the expansion. That’s when they turned to the Orange County Inland Empire Small Business Development Center (OCIE SBDC) for guidance and support.

Working with SBDC consultant Ace Tarakchian, the couple explored financing options, received expert advice on accessing capital, and gained a clearer understanding of their financial responsibilities. “Ace directed us towards all the available resources from the SBDC. We are more knowledgeable now,” Sarah said.

With the SBDC’s help, the Maninangs developed financial projections and weighed all loan options. In the end, they made the informed decision to invest their personal funds to bring their second Gelatissimo location to life.

Investing in People and Growth

Since opening, Gelatissimo’s Irvine location has created 15 jobs and continues to see increasing sales. Beyond capital investment and financial planning, the SBDC also helped Sarah tap into local resources such as workforce development programs and subsidies, amplifying their growth potential.

Reflecting on her journey, Sarah said, “The most important part of the assistance I received from the SBDC was the guidance to local resources that helped us establish Gelatissimo for success”.
