Creating a Space for Artists and Musicians

Simon Drew’s journey from private music lessons to creating a thriving artistic space was driven by a passion for education and a vision for community.

Simon Drew’s journey to entrepreneurship began with his deep passion for music education. Having spent years mentoring aspiring artists and refining his teaching methods, he recognized a growing demand for innovative and personalized instruction. This realization, coupled with his dream of creating a space where he could nurture talent and build his legacy, led to the creation of The Sanctuary Studio.

“I started this business because after years of private mentorship and music teaching, I began to see a hunger in the education market for new and innovative programs,” Simon shared. “I wanted a space where I could offer these services while also having my own creative sanctuary.”

Overcoming Obstacles to Success

Launching a business comes with its share of challenges, and for Simon, navigating the financial and operational aspects was a daunting task — especially as someone relatively new to the U.S. That’s where the OCIE SBDC stepped in.

Simon worked closely with OCIE SBDC consultant Larry Charpentier, who provided essential guidance at every stage, from securing a business loan to leasing a commercial space.

“Being relatively new to the country, I wasn’t sure what was possible with my financial situation,” Simon recalled. “Larry helped me see my strengths and vulnerabilities, guiding me through loan applications, lease agreements, and business planning.”

Through one-on-one consulting, Larry provided Simon with the knowledge and confidence to secure a loan, choose the right location, and structure his business for long-term success.

“The consulting I received from Larry has been vital to the success of this business,” Simon emphasized.

Building a Creative Future

With the support of the OCIE SBDC, The Sanctuary Studio officially opened its doors in October 2024. The impact was immediate — Simon saw an increase in sales by several thousand dollars and established a strong foundation for growth.

Beyond financial success, The Sanctuary Studio has become a cultural hotspot in Santa Ana, fostering artistic collaboration and providing a much-needed space for musicians and creatives.

“The SBDC helped open my mind to what was really possible,” Simon reflected. “Their guidance on lease agreements, loan options, and community networking gave me the confidence to turn my vision into reality.”

Looking ahead, Simon is focused on expanding The Sanctuary Studio’s offerings and continuing to cultivate a dynamic, inclusive space for artistic expression. With a strong start and a bright future, The Sanctuary Studio stands as a testament to the power of perseverance, mentorship, and community support.
