From Brush to Business Owner

“De pintor a empresario: pinta tu futuro” empowers entrepreneurs in the painting industry

The Orange County Inland Empire Small Business Development Center Network (OCIE SBDC) is proud to announce the successful completion of the “De pintor a empresario: pinta tu futuro” program! This program, made possible through partnerships with Sherwin Williams and the Orange County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (OCHCC), was offered exclusively in Spanish and positioned participants to turn their painting skills into thriving businesses over an intensive five-week journey.

The program provided comprehensive support and guidance, helping participants launch and grow their own painting businesses. “The partnership between Sherwin Williams, the Orange County Inland Empire SBDC, and the Orange County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is a great example of how three organizations can come together to address the future needs of an industry,” said Mike Daniel, OCIE SBDC network director. “I am excited to see how the ‘De pintor a empresario: pinta tu futuro’ program continues to support future business owners, helping them build lifelong careers and generational wealth.”

Addressing Industry Challenges

The painting industry is currently facing more than just paint shortages, supply chain disruptions, and inflation. In addition to recovering from COVID-19 setbacks, contractors are now dealing with another major challenge: labor shortages. Despite new work opportunities and increased demand for design services, the industry is experiencing a decline in skilled craftworkers, including painters. With many commercial and residential painters retiring or leaving the industry over the next decade, it’s estimated that more than 100,000 newly trained painters will be needed to fill the gap. Additionally, more than 60% of the current workforce is Spanish-speaking, highlighting the importance of programs like “De pintor a empresario” in preparing the next generation of professionals.

Celebrating Graduates' Achievements

We are thrilled to celebrate the achievements of the 41 participants who have successfully completed the program. Graduates walked away with not only a business plan but a deeper understanding of how to market their services, manage their finances, and build a strong digital footprint, as well. Congressman Lou Correa attended the graduation event and acknowledged the hard work of the participants. Each participant received an OCIE SBDC certificate of completion, a membership to the OCHCC, and special prizes from Sherwin Williams.

The “De pintor a empresario: pinta tu futuro” program is tailored for entrepreneurs who are ready to turn their passion for painting into a successful business. Over the course of five weeks, participants received expert-led instruction and one-on-one business consulting. In addition to the weekly in-person workshops, each participant is paired with a business consultant who provides one-on-one coaching throughout and after the program. This personalized support ensures that entrepreneurs can address their unique challenges and needs as they launch their businesses.
