Building a Legacy: Imperial Fight Academy Opens with Help from the OCIE SBDC

Riley Miller, a seasoned martial arts instructor with over a decade of experience at US KO, recently took on a significant challenge—continuing the legacy of his mentor and starting his own martial arts academy.

When his instructor decided to step down and retire, Riley Miller was entrusted to continue offering top-notch Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing classes for both kids and adults. Known for his strong commitment to his students and his ability to build lasting bonds, Riley brings a personal touch to every training session.

Navigating Compliance and Leasing Challenges

Starting a business, however, is never easy. For Riley, the journey began with identifying and obtaining the necessary compliance items to legally open his new facility. After the space he was planning to lease was suddenly sold, Riley was also left searching for a new location for his studio.

Fortunately, Riley found support through the OCIE SBDC, where he received invaluable assistance in navigating the complexities of business setup. Consultant Bob Kirkpatrick started the process by helping Riley work through the lease terms and negotiations. He then enlisted the expertise of consultant Jay Allis, who assisted with everything from permits and business licensing to business structure and insurance needs. With their guidance, Riley was able to stay on track despite the challenges.

A Clear Path Forward

The SBDC’s step-by-step approach made the entire process more manageable, giving him clarity on each task that needed to be completed. Riley was especially appreciative of the dynamic nature of the support, as the pivot from one business plan to another required flexibility. The SBDC’s support ensured that Riley’s evolving needs were met, helping him move forward without feeling overwhelmed.

“Jay Allis and Bob Kirkpatrick have been tremendously helpful with every step in me starting up my business,” Riley said. “I honestly don’t know how I would be able to get through this process without their help.”

A Successful Launch and Positive Outcomes

With the support of the SBDC, Riley successfully opened Imperial Fight Academy on July 6, 2024. He secured all the necessary permits, licenses, and compliance items, allowing him to open his doors to students. Riley’s invested capital has already led to the creation of two jobs and generated tens of thousands in sales, positioning the academy for growth and success in the competitive martial arts industry.
